AIGA Retreat uncovers addiction to social networking

AIGA Retreat uncovers addiction to social networking

For me, an unexpected result of the AIGA Leadership Retreat in Omaha has been a new addiction to social networking, more specifically, to “facebook.”

Before the retreat, I was slow to social networking. My friends had to build a “myspace” profile for me because I thought I was too old! In fact, I thought all of these social networking sites were for “kids.”

Boy, was I wrong! Anybody who is anybody–be it college student, or business, you name it–has at least one social networking presence. There’s myspace, facebook, linkedin—and those are just a few of the top ones…there are many, many more.

The one I am now intrigued with is “facebook.” Within minutes, I was connected with old friends, new friends, associates, and colleagues from all over the country. Some of these people I hadn’t seen or talked to in ages. All of a sudden, it was as if I was transported back to the last day of school, and I was getting as many people as I could to sign my yearbook before summer vacation started.

And then there’s the anticipation, you can’t wait to check back in to see who else has “friended” you or posted a message on your “wall.” It is truly addictive!
