feng shui your life

May 30, 2008

Have you ever stepped into someone else’s home or office and felt uncomfortable because there was so much clutter? I often feel this way at Cracker Barrel and Applebee’s. A walk through one of these restaurants makes me long for Feng Shui, the study and theory around eliminating clutter.

Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese practice believed to utilize the laws of heaven and earth in order to improve life by enabling positive energy. It’s the practice of arranging objects such as furniture, rugs, pictures, etc., to help achieve positive energy.

Think all of this sounds nutty? Feng Shui’s creators certainly didn’t. Feng Shui was developed thousands of years ago in villages in China (the Orient). It was orginally called Folk Feng Shui and the villagers’ livelihoods were dependent on it. They studied the formations of the land and ways of the wind & water to determine the best place for their survival. Good Feng Shui would produce bountiful harvest, healthy livestock and abundant life. Bad Feng Shui would produce harsh winds and violent storms would destroy their crops, leaving no food for their family or their animals.

If you’re still questioning Feng Shui, you’re not alone. Feng Shui isn’t just something you do. It’s something you live. To embrace it demands a complete perception and action overhaul. And that’s no small undertaking. But, hey, if you’re feeling crazy, and you want to start living shui-style, start arranging and see how it feels.

I don’t think Feng Shui is nutty at all. I’ve found a lot of success, just from keeping my clutter to a minimum and posting pictures of serene settings in my office. By just realizing that there is energy in your workspace and in your home, you can begin to see how things can be shifted in order to balance this energy more effectively.
